RNG Coalition marks launch of Virginia facility as sector targets 1,000 sites by 2030

RNG Coalition has marked the launch of a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at Oakmulgee Dairy Farm in Virginia, as part of its broader goal to reach 1,000 operational RNG sites across North America by 2030. The facility, developed by Vanguard Renewables, uses anaerobic digestion and depackaging technology to convert dairy manure and food waste into pipeline-quality gas. It is part of a joint venture with TotalEnergies, with AstraZeneca acting as the offtaker to support its U.S. operations. The project reflects the sector’s growing focus on co-digestion, combining agricultural and food waste to improve efficiency, reduce methane emissions, and make RNG projects more viable—especially for smaller farms and rural communities. Launched in 2019, the coalition’s SMART initiative aims to address methane emissions from over 43,000 waste sources by 2050. The RNG sector already reached 500 facilities in 2025, and is now targeting rapid expansion to double that number within five years. Overall, the new Virginia plant highlights continued momentum in RNG development and its role in reducing emissions while scaling sustainable energy infrastructure.
