France's Engie discussing refund for offshore wind projects with Trump administration

French utility Engie is in discussions with the U.S. Trump administration about potentially receiving refunds related to offshore wind project leases, as political opposition to Wind energy in the U.S. has grown. Engie CEO Catherine MacGregor said a deal could be possible depending on negotiations, but noted uncertainty due to changing government policy. The company has already paused several U.S. offshore wind projects and recorded financial impairments linked to its Ocean Winds joint venture. The talks come after other energy firms, such as TotalEnergies, redirected investments away from offshore wind toward oil and Gas projects in the U.S. amid policy shifts favoring fossil fuels. President Trump has expressed strong opposition to Wind energy, criticizing it as expensive and inefficient, and his administration has promoted increased domestic oil and Gas production instead. Despite the challenges, Engie continues to support offshore wind long-term, with its CEO emphasizing its importance for clean energy, while acknowledging the need for better planning and stakeholder engagement.
