Pentagon Adopts Palantir’s Maven AI as Core Military System

The U.S. Department of Defense will officially designate Palantir’s Maven artificial intelligence system as a program of record, ensuring its long-term use across all branches of the military. Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg said the system will provide warfighters with advanced tools to detect, deter, and dominate adversaries in all domains. Maven, a command-and-control platform, analyzes battlefield data from satellites, drones, radars, sensors, and intelligence reports to rapidly identify potential threats such as enemy vehicles, buildings, and weapons stockpiles. Oversight of the system will move from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to the Pentagon’s Chief Digital Artificial Intelligence Office, with future contracting handled by the Army. The designation is a major win for Palantir, which has secured growing government contracts, including a $10 billion Army deal, doubling its stock price over the past year and raising its market value to nearly $360 billion. While the adoption streamlines deployment and funding, experts have warned of ethical, legal, and security risks, cautioning that AI weapons targeting may inherit biases and operate without sufficient human oversight.
