German start-up Polarise plans 30-megawatt AI data Center Building

Polarise, a German start-up, plans to build a 30-megawatt AI data center in Amberg, Bavaria, scheduled to begin operations in mid-2027. The facility could later expand to 120 MW and would significantly increase Germany’s domestically operated computing capacity, supporting Europe’s goal of stronger technological sovereignty. According to figures from Bitkom, Germany had about 530 MW of AI data-centre capacity at the End of last year, though much of it is run by foreign providers. European countries are now pushing for greater control over data and AI infrastructure due to geopolitical tensions and differing global regulations. The project’s first phase is expected to cost several hundred million euros, covering infrastructure but not the chips. Large tech companies such as Google and Amazon Web Services typically operate much larger data centers, around 100 MW or more. Polarise, which runs 13 data Centers, said the project will rely on renewable energy. Its partner WV-Energie plans to install wind and solar power systems with battery storage to supply electricity for the energy-intensive facility
