Houston energy tech company breaks ground on low-cost green hydrogen pilot plant

Lummus Technology and Advanced Ionics have begun construction on a green hydrogen pilot plant at Lummus’ R&D facility in Pasadena, Texas. The project will demonstrate Advanced Ionics’ advanced electrolyzer technology, which produces green hydrogen more efficiently by converting process and waste heat into hydrogen, reducing overall energy use and cost. The pilot plant will be operated by Lummus, which will also manage the balance-of-plant systems. The goal is to validate the technology under real-world conditions and accelerate its commercialization. Advanced Ionics says its system can produce green hydrogen for less than $1 per kilogram, making it an attractive option for industrial hydrogen producers seeking affordable, sustainable solutions. The project builds on a partnership formed in 2024, when Lummus and Advanced Ionics agreed to collaborate on low-cost hydrogen production and Lummus Venture Capital made an undisclosed investment in Advanced Ionics. Both companies say the pilot marks an important step toward scalable and economically viable green hydrogen deployment.
