OpenAI agrees to acquire AI startup Neptune to boost model training capabilities
OpenAI has announced that it will acquire Neptune, a startup known for its tools that help companies track, monitor, and debug the training of AI models. Although OpenAI did not disclose the transaction amount, The Information reports the deal is valued at under $400 million in OpenAI stock. OpenAI has already been a long-time Neptune customer, using the platform to manage training workflows for its GPT large language models. Neptune’s broader client base includes major companies such as Samsung, Roche, and HP, indicating its importance in large-scale machine learning operations. Neptune originated as an internal tool inside Deepsense, before being spun out as an independent company in 2018. Since then, it has raised more than $18 million in funding, according to its website. The acquisition gives OpenAI deeper control of the infrastructure and tooling it relies on for large-model development, while potentially removing a valuable asset from the third-party market. The deal comes at a time when OpenAI is experiencing rapid growth and rising financial valuations. In October, the company reportedly hit a $500 billion valuation, driven largely by a secondary share sale totaling about $6.6 billion, involving both current and former employees. With backing from Microsoft, OpenAI is also preparing for what could be one of the largest IPOs in history, with analysts suggesting it may reach a valuation of up to $1 trillion. The company is said to be laying the regulatory and structural groundwork necessary to go public as early as the second half of 2026.
