EBA: Communities are key to Europe’s biogas future

Biogas and biomethane are becoming key to Europe’s green transition, tackling emissions, managing waste, and supporting rural economies. Success increasingly depends on community support, as NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) and political hesitation (NIMTO) can delay projects. Europe produced 22 bcm of biogases in 2023, with biomethane growing fastest and most plants connected to the gas grid. By 2040, production could exceed 100 bcm, meeting up to 80% of reduced EU gas demand. Biogas is currently the most cost-effective renewable gas, cheaper than alternatives like hydrogen. Challenges include odour, traffic, methane leakage, feedstock sustainability, and water pollution. Modern plants minimize risks through proper design, monitoring, and management. Engagement with local communities is essential to prevent misinformation, build trust, and ensure project success. Short Criteriums Impact on German Manufacturers 1. More stable renewable gas supply energy security. 2. Lower energy costs biogas is cost-effective . 3. Access to green gases easier decarbonization. 4. Reduced fossil gas dependency lower geopolitical risk. 5. Community-related delays potential project slowdowns. 6. Stricter methane rules compliance obligations. 7. Circular economy opportunities use of local waste streams.
