Shell buys offshore wind power for new electrolyzer plant in Germany

Shell has signed a five-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nord see One GmbH, a joint venture of Northland Power (85%) and RWE (15%), to supply renewable electricity for its REFHYNE 2 hydrogen electrolyze at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rhein land. Starting in June 2027, Shell will take around one-third of the annual output from the 332 MW Nord see One offshore wind farm to power the electrolyze. The 100 MW REFHYNE 2 electrolyze, currently under construction, will produce green hydrogen to help decarbonize Shell’s energy products, which are used across Europe. The wind farm, located north of the German island of Juist, consists of 54 turbines, each generating 6.15 MW, and has been operational since December 2017. Shell says the agreement demonstrates how renewable electricity and low-carbon solutions can work together to reduce industrial emissions and accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen technology. Nord see One also notes that the corporate PPA provides stable economic and environmental benefits while showcasing the potential of offshore wind in supporting Germany’s industrial decarbonization
