EU’s Warning about risks of AI rules.

The European Commission has introduced a “Digital Omnibus” package aimed at simplifying and reducing the complexity of several major tech regulations. As part of this effort, the Commission proposes delaying the enforcement of high-risk AI rules in the EU’s AI Act from August 2026 to December 2027. These delayed rules cover sensitive uses of AI such as biometric identification, road traffic systems, utilities, job applications and exams, healthcare, credit assessments, and law enforcement. The move comes after growing criticism from Big Tech companies and businesses that EU regulations are too burdensome and harm competitiveness. The Commission argues that the goal is streamlining, not weakening the rules. The Omnibus package also includes updates to other major laws—GDPR, the e-Privacy Directive, and the Data Act—as well as simplified cookie-consent requirements. The proposal will now be debated and voted on by EU member states
