New U.S. Index to Shape Global Hydrogen Prices

The Clean Hydrogen Buyers Alliance has proposed the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Index, a real-time pricing benchmark for clean hydrogen. Modeled after the Henry Hub for natural gas, it aims to bring transparency to the global hydrogen market, supporting buyers, sellers, and investors. The index will cover pipeline-grade hydrogen in three categories: basic, low-carbon, and ultra-low-carbon. The global clean hydrogen market was valued at $200 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $700 billion by 2040. Lack of a pricing benchmark has kept hydrogen in niche markets, slowing investment. The index seeks to provide credible pricing signals, reduce risk, and position the U.S. as a trading anchor for hydrogen. Benefits for U.S. manufacturers: -Provides transparent pricing for better investment and contracting decisions -Builds confidence among buyers, investors, and government agencies -Reduces market risk and encourages domestic clean hydrogen production -Strengthens the Gulf Coast as a hub for hydrogen infrastructure and trade
