Intuitive Machines Secures $9.8M Government Contract to Advance Orbital Transfer Vehicle Program

Houston-based space technology firm Intuitive Machines has secured a $9.8 million Phase Two government contract to accelerate development of its Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV)—a spacecraft designed to ferry payloads between Earth orbit and the Moon. The award advances the program into the Critical Design Review phase, the final engineering milestone before manufacturing can begin. The announcement comes just weeks after the company rang the opening bell at NASDAQ on July 31, highlighting its continued momentum as one of the U.S. commercial space sector’s fastest-rising players. Built on Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lunar lander platform, the OTV is intended to support a broad range of in-space logistics, including payload delivery, orbital servicing, and communications between orbital platforms. The system will play a key role in enabling end-to-end transportation across Earth-Moon orbital environments. “This effort builds on our lunar mission heritage and moves us deeper into the emerging in-space logistics market,” said CEO Stephen Altemus. He added that the OTV aligns with the company’s strategy to provide scalable infrastructure for both civil and national security customers. Flight integration and manufacturing are scheduled to begin in 2026, following successful completion of the design review. While the specific U.S. government agency funding the contract remains undisclosed, the award reflects Intuitive Machines’ growing diversification beyond NASA and into commercial and defense-aligned markets. The new funding builds on a strong year for the Houston-based company, which recently secured up to $10 million from Texas’s Space Exploration and Research Fund, and completed an expansion at the Houston Spaceport at Ellington Airport. As demand grows for flexible, high-performance orbital infrastructure, Intuitive Machines is positioning itself at the center of the next wave of space logistics—extending its reach well beyond the Moon.
