🇩🇪 RWE Launches Tender for Hydrogen Storage Capacity in Germany

RWE Gas Storage West GmbH, a subsidiary of German energy giant RWE, has initiated a tender for 30% of the capacity at its upcoming hydrogen storage facility in Gronau-Epe, North Rhine-Westphalia. The site, currently under construction, will feature two caverns with the ability to store up to 38 million cubic metres of hydrogen and an injection/withdrawal capacity of 50,000 cubic metres per hour. While 70% of the facility's capacity has already been allocated, the remaining 30% is now open to the market, with availability starting January 1, 2028. Backed by the IPCEI Hy2Infra programme, the first cavern will be filled by mid-2026, with full commercial operations set to commence by July 1, 2027. The tender follows a recently completed market survey, reinforcing the project's strategic role in Europe's green hydrogen infrastructure.
