🔋 Houston Breaks Ground on $135M Battery Storage Facility to Boost Grid Resilience

SMT Energy, CenterPoint Energy, and Irby Construction have officially broken ground on a $135 million battery energy storage system (BESS) in Houston’s ERCOT zone. The 160-megawatt project—called SMT Houston IV—aims to enhance grid stability, provide fast-response backup during peak usage, and support renewable energy integration. The facility is projected to power 8,800 Texas homes annually and is set to go online by 2026. CenterPoint will handle grid interconnection, while Irby Construction oversees engineering, procurement, and construction, with project completion targeted for July 2025. This milestone follows SMT’s $135 million funding round led by Macquarie and KeyBanc Capital Markets, and is part of a broader plan to double battery capacity across Houston and Dallas.
