🇪🇺 EU Launches New Support Mechanism for Energy Communities in Brussels

the European Parliament in Brussels hosted the official launch of the European Energy Communities Facility, a new initiative aimed at supporting the development of at least 140 local energy communities across Europe. The mechanism will offer lump-sum grants and tailored capacity-building programs, facilitated by a network of national experts acting as intermediaries between EU institutions and grassroots initiatives. The opening debate brought together around 140 participants, including Members of the European Parliament from the EPP, S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA, and The Left, along with representatives from the European Commission. Speakers emphasized the strategic importance of decentralized energy systems in light of today’s geopolitical uncertainties. Key challenges raised included limited access to information, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and insufficient funding. The facility aims to address these gaps and generate a multiplier effect by sharing knowledge and best practices across regions. Voices from the field highlighted ongoing struggles to access public funding and stressed the need to bridge the gap between governments and local networks to ensure funds effectively reach project initiators.
