Borussia Dortmund Kicks Off World’s Largest Stadium Solar Project ⚡

Borussia Dortmund is set to install the world’s largest photovoltaic system on a stadium roof, aiming to boost sustainability at its iconic Westfalenstadion. In partnership with RWE and Chinese manufacturer Ja Solar, the 4.2 MW solar system—paired with a 3.4 MWh battery—will generate about 4,000 MWh of electricity annually, covering the club’s own energy needs and cutting CO₂ emissions by 1,800 tons each year. Completion is planned for summer 2025. Meanwhile, Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium has activated its own large-scale solar project with 9,300 panels producing 3,880 MWh per year—enough to exceed its energy consumption and support nearby heating systems.
