T1 Energy Picks Texas for $850M, 5GW Solar Cell Plant ☀️

Solar manufacturer T1 Energy has chosen Milam County near Austin, Texas, for a massive 5GW solar cell factory, investing up to $850 million. Formerly Freyr Battery, T1 Energy also relocated its headquarters from Georgia to Austin as part of a recent rebranding. Construction on the new “G2 Austin” plant is set to begin mid-2025, with commercial production expected in the second half of 2026. The site is located near T1’s existing 5GW module assembly plant, “G1 Dallas,” which it acquired from TrinaSolar and has already produced over 220MW of solar products in early 2025, exceeding targets by 48%. T1 aims for 3.4GW of module production in 2025 and is positioning itself as a vertically integrated U.S. solar and battery storage leader. Texas Leads U.S. in Solar Boom In 2024, Texas added over 11.6GW of solar PV, outpacing all other states. The state is attracting major solar manufacturers including Canadian Solar, SEG Solar, Toyo, and TMEIC, with several companies establishing gigawatt-scale facilities in Houston and beyond.
