Italy, Great Britain, and Germany Emerge as Europe’s Most Attractive BESS Markets ⚡

Italy, Great Britain, and Germany have emerged as the most attractive markets for battery energy storage system (BESS) investments in Europe, according to Aurora Energy Research’s latest European Battery Markets Attractiveness Report (BatMAR). With Europe’s grid-scale BESS capacity at 10.3GW in 2024 and projected to hit 55GW by 2030—and potentially 126GW by 2050—the sector represents a €100 billion investment opportunity. Italy tops the ranking due to ambitious targets of 50GWh battery capacity by 2030 and its ancillary markets opening to BESS assets. The UK follows closely, benefiting from strong revenue streams and an established BESS industry. Germany claims third place, overtaking Ireland, thanks to its expanding renewable energy market. Emerging markets like Belgium, Hungary, and Greece are also highlighted as promising for smaller investors or those with higher risk tolerance. Aurora Energy Research emphasizes that while BESS investment is growing rapidly, market complexities and evolving revenue streams require a strategic approach to long-term profitability.
