SMT Energy Secures $100M Financing for 160-MW BESS in Texas ⚡

SMT Energy has secured $100 million in financing for its 160-MW/320-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Houston, Texas. The funding was arranged by Macquarie Group and KeyBanc Capital Markets, with Macquarie also managing the sale of $62 million in investment tax credits. The SMT Houston IV BESS will connect to the ERCOT grid, offering energy storage and ancillary services to the wholesale market. Scheduled to begin commercial operations in Q2 2026, the system will store and dispatch enough electricity to power 8,800 homes annually. FlexGen Power Systems will supply equipment and its HybridOS energy management software for the project. SMT Energy now has 18 utility-scale BESS assets (500 MWh) in operation or under construction and is developing a 2-GWh pipeline for ERCOT and the Southwest Power Pool, targeting completion by 2030.
