⚡ Amprion Launches Tender for Five Large-Scale Battery Storage Units

Germany’s battery storage market is expanding rapidly, with large-scale storage capacity reaching 2.6 GWh in 2024 and expected to more than double in 2025. However, the growing demand is creating challenges for grid operators as many storage units operate based on market prices rather than grid stability. To address this issue, grid operator Amprion has launched a tender for five large-scale battery storage systems designed specifically to relieve grid loads at critical moments while remaining economically viable. Unlike existing storage units, which often contribute to imbalances by capitalizing on price fluctuations, these new batteries will be deployed strategically to support Germany’s energy transition. With increasing connection requests and a surge in renewable energy generation, Germany’s grid operators are under pressure to integrate storage solutions that not only provide profitability but also enhance grid stability. Current large-scale storage capacity in Germany reached an estimated 2.6 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2024 and is expected to more than double this year.
