🚁 AI-Powered Cargo Drones Tested at Vattenfall’s German Offshore Wind Farms

Vattenfall, in collaboration with Ampelmann and the Dutch Applied Scientific Research Institute (TNO), has successfully tested AI-powered cargo drones at its DanTysk and Sandbank offshore wind farms in the German North Sea. The tests are part of the AIRTuB-ROMI project, which focuses on automated inspection and repair of wind turbine blades. Using AI and advanced sensors, the system autonomously detects anomalies, deploys drones for high-resolution imaging, and performs ultrasonic scans to assess structural health. Beyond inspections, cargo drones can transport essential tools and materials from vessels or service centers, reducing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency. Vattenfall highlights that these innovations boost worker safety and contribute to more sustainable offshore operations. With ongoing AI advancements, drones are expected to become even more autonomous, enabling early-stage damage detection and automated maintenance, helping address the shortage of skilled technicians in the offshore wind sector.
