🔋 Apex Clean Energy Launches 100MW Battery Storage Facility in South Texas

Apex Clean Energy has unveiled its new 100-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hidalgo County, Texas, named Great Kiskadee Storage. The facility, part of a joint venture with SK Gas and SK eternix, aims to enhance grid reliability by storing excess renewable energy and releasing it during peak demand. This project is part of Texas' rapid expansion in battery storage, which has grown over 5,500% since early 2024. The facility can power approximately 75,000 homes and includes funding for restoring 200 acres of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. While concerns about fire risks from lithium-ion batteries persist, experts note serious incidents are rare. Texas now ranks second in the U.S. for battery storage capacity, with over 4,800 MW installed.
