🚗 Ford Gets Extension for Michigan EV Battery Plant

Michigan has granted Ford Motor Co. an additional year to fulfill its investment and job creation commitments for its electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Marshall, about 100 miles west of Detroit. The extension, finalized in January 2025, comes as the automaker scales back the project amid growing uncertainties in the EV market. Originally announced as a $3.5 billion investment expected to create 2,500 jobs, Ford reduced the scale of the plant in 2023, citing shifting EV demand and economic pressures. The site, intended to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in collaboration with China’s CATL, faced political and regulatory scrutiny, leading to delays. Despite the extension, Ford remains committed to the project, emphasizing its long-term EV strategy. However, the move reflects a broader industry trend of automakers reassessing their EV investments in response to fluctuating consumer demand, supply chain challenges, and evolving government policies.
