The Growing Momentum of Waste-to-Energy in the Middle East for 2024
As the Middle East ramps up its efforts in waste management post-COP28, waste-to-energy (WTE) projects are gaining significant traction. Key developments include the $1.09 billion Dubai Waste Management Centre, set to be the world’s largest WTE facility, and Saudi Arabia's ambitious recycling and WTE targets aimed at creating 100,000 new jobs. Oman, Egypt, Iraq, and Bahrain are also making strides with various WTE projects, contributing to regional sustainability and energy goals.

Developing a Pan-European Hydrogen Network: The European Hydrogen Backbone Initiative
The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative brings together 33 energy infrastructure operators from 29 countries to create a dedicated hydrogen transport network across Europe. Its primary objectives are to help achieve climate neutrality by 2050, enhance energy security, and stimulate market competition by integrating hydrogen into the energy system.
The EHB plans to repurpose existing natural gas pipelines and build new ones to establish a comprehensive hydrogen network. This infrastructure will support the large-scale production, transport, and use of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, promoting cross-border hydrogen trade and cooperation.
EHB is guided by a Steering Committee, which includes representatives from member organizations, and is supported by Guidehouse as its secretariat. The initiative focuses on creating a competitive hydrogen market, ensuring supply security, and fostering collaboration among European countries.
By implementing the hydrogen backbone, EHB aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions, support the EU’s energy transition, and enable a sustainable and resilient energy future. For more information, visit the European Hydrogen Backbone website.
