In the past two weeks, the retail sector in Germany has shown a complex mix of growth, consumer caution, and market trends, with both short-term gains and long-term challenges. The data highlights the ongoing adjustment to inflation, promotional campaigns, and consumer behavior shifts.


Growth in FMCG and Drugstore Sales:


Retail spending on Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) grew by 2.4% in Q2 2024. This increase was driven by a drop in inflation, which led to a higher consumer willingness to spend.

Personal care products saw a 6.1% growth, and sales of e-cigarettes rose, with a significant portion attributed to sticks, the core component of e-cigarettes. In contrast, tobacco product sales grew by 4.4%, but the growth was price-driven as unit sales dropped​.


Impact of European Football Championships:


Despite the anticipation of a significant sales boost from the European Football Championship, the impact on FMCG was mixed. Sales of beer and ice cream fell during the tournament due to poor weather but picked up during the final sunny weeks of June. Snacks sales, however, increased by 4.1%, driven by the tournament's excitement​
