U.S. Ocean Energy Safety Institute Launches $16 Million Fund for Offshore Safety and Technology Research

The U.S.-based Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI) has unveiled a $16 million research fund aimed at enhancing safety protocols across the offshore energy sector, including renewable energy and oil and gas. This initiative, funded by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and the Department of Energy (DOE), invites offshore energy experts to submit proposals by October 18, 2024.

OESI plans to award 30 to 40 grants, each up to $500,000, with recipients required to provide at least 20% in cost-sharing. Key focus areas include improving safety in small-scale and utility-scale marine energy operations, enhancing oil and gas infrastructure integrity, and ensuring safe wind energy practices.

The proposals will undergo a transparent evaluation process, with announcements of the awarded projects anticipated in January 2025. This funding initiative reflects OESI's commitment to advancing technology and workforce development for safer, sustainable, and cost-effective energy production in the U.S.
