UK Advances Sustainable Energy Goals by Shortlisting Rolls Royce and Others for Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Development

The UK government has shortlisted four companies, including Rolls Royce and GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy, for the next phase of its competition aimed at developing small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This initiative is part of the country's efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. The shortlisted companies will engage in negotiations with the government regarding the potential deployment of these units, with two likely to be selected for projects set to be operational in the 2030s.

The other two contenders in this stage are Westinghouse and Holtec Britain. The UK government aims to replace some aging nuclear plants with SMRs, which can be manufactured in factories, allowing for lower costs and faster construction compared to traditional large nuclear projects. This move is seen as a key strategy to facilitate financing and enhance the country's energy capabilities.
