Germany awards first green hydrogen import contract to ammonia project in Egypt

Germany has made significant strides in its green hydrogen strategy by awarding its first import contract for green ammonia from Egypt. The contract, spanning from 2027 to 2033, involves importing at least 259,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, which represents over ten percent of Germany's annual ammonia production. This move is seen as pivotal for Germany's industrial transformation and climate goals, with estimated annual CO2 savings of 93,000 tonnes through the use of 273 megawatts of renewable energy in Egypt. The contract, awarded at a competitive price of 811 euros per tonne of ammonia, underscores Germany's commitment to advancing its hydrogen market and reducing costs for green hydrogen derivatives. Looking ahead, Germany plans to build on this initial success with further import rounds totaling 3.5 billion euros, reinforcing the importance of international partnerships in meeting domestic demand and decarbonizing key sectors like steelmaking and chemicals.
