Geotechnical Surveys Begin at TotalEnergies’ 2 GW German Offshore Wind Site

TotalEnergies has begun geotechnical surveys at its NordSee Energies 1 (NSE1) offshore wind farm at the N-12.1 site in Germany, contracting Fugro to carry out the work. The investigations will cover around 140 locations, reaching depths of up to 50 meters below the seabed, and will inform the design of turbine foundations and inter-array cable routes. Fugro is deploying a fleet of five specialist vessels and advanced technologies, including its SEACALF Mk V seabed cone penetration testing system. Laboratory testing will follow at Fugro’s facilities in Wallingford, UK, and Louvain, Belgium. TotalEnergies secured the N-12.1 site in the 2023 German offshore wind tender with a bid of €1.875 million/MW, totaling €3.75 billion. The company also obtained the 1 GW Ostsee Energies (OSE) site in the Baltic Sea, O-2.2, for €2.07 million/MW (€2.07 billion total). Permit applications for both projects were submitted to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in November 2025. Construction for NSE1 and OSE is scheduled to start in 2029, with commissioning expected by 2031. Remmelt de Jong, Fugro’s Regional Business Line Director for Marine Site Characterisation, said the five-vessel program represents one of the largest offshore wind surveys undertaken in Europe and will provide critical foundation data to keep the projects on schedule while supporting Europe’s clean energy goals.
