Germany makes Huge Investment in Military Space Center

Germany has announced a major €35 billion investment by 2030 to rapidly expand its military space capabilities—an effort equal to the entire budget of the European Space Agency. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned that Germany’s “Achilles’ heel lies in space,” as modern life and national security depend heavily on vulnerable satellite systems. The plan aims to reduce reliance on allies and commercial providers like Starlink by developing sovereign satellite systems, stronger protection against hacking and jamming, improved orbital surveillance, and potentially offensive capabilities such as inspector satellites and jamming satellites. This marks a significant shift for Germany, long committed to a defensive posture. The initiative also seeks to boost German and European space industry competitiveness, encouraging innovation in AI, launch technologies, and defense-related space applications. With rising threats from Russia and China and increasing space-based warfare—as seen in Ukraine—Germany aims to position itself as a leading force in European space security and ensure control over its critical space infrastructure.
